THE LATEST IN LEE & WOLFE NEWS:
"The 107.7 Thing"
Thank you thank you thank you to the many of you who have written or plan to write, call, fax, or e-mail WRAX, "107.7 The X" in Birmingham. [ Visit them at
http://www.wraxfm.com ] It may yet do some good. On Thursday, Wolfe and I decided to show up unannounced like the rude bastards that we are at the station in question, to meet with Dave Rossi, the program director. A mean ol' secretary told us "he doesn't usually see anyone without an appointment." So we cried and cried and said "but we caaaalled and he said this wuz a guud time to catch hiiiiiiimmm." Whining didn't help. She was good. So we went to a phone, called Dave, and he agreed to at least meet the infamous Lee & Wolfe for a few minutes before he ran off to meet Everyone at Everywhere. Here's the gist of the chat we had: "Oh, so this is a real radio show?"
Basically, he had our CD and resume packet, and a lot of letters. "The General Manager asked me 'what's all this stuff?' and I said it was some college DJs who got their propaganda machine goin'," explained Dave. Overall, he seemed to take us seriously, although he had not yet heard anything of ours, and was fairly neutral as we expected. He explained the process they're going through--as we figured he might-they're placing national this week and next, and after 3 or 4 weeks, he'll narrow it down to a top 3 or so, then make a decision. He said all their options are open, including syndicating Stern (God FORBID!), or him staying on the morning shift (which he didn't like). We were one of the first to apply. He did mention a DJ from New York who applied, but said he "wasn't very good." At least now he knows we exist, and aren't too terribly weird.
Keep communicating with him and that station in general if you like. E-mail, maybe to other DJs there, would be good at this point since it can't really be left unopened. Heidi in Florida tried this with Suzy Boe, and got a very curious response! We'll keep you updated.
"A Week of L&W TV"
Between March 4 and March 9, 1998, there was a Lee & Wolfe appearance on local TV no less than 6 times! 1) Lee in episode 2 of a campus soap-opera playing the part of a stalked teacher 2) Lee & Wolfe interviewed on News Channel 49's Town Talk with Philip Coleman 3) Lee & Wolfe interviewed on Comcast Cable's Talk of the Town on ch.20 with Kip Tyner 4) replay of 3 5) replay of 3 6) replay of 2. We'll encode and upload these things to the website so you can laugh at them all too.
COMING UP ON THE SHOW:
"Band-wise"
This week it's Cotton Mather, a band from Houston, Texas, who play what is currently being characterized around V-91 at early Beatles sounding rock. Good stuff you could easily hear on an alternative type station. In fact, you will at about 7:00 pm (CST) on Friday night.
"Other-wise"
The engineer at V-91 finally got all the parts for the telephone hybrid, that oh-so-hard-to-keep-a-hold-of device that lets us put phone calls on the air properly! So give us a call this week, from wherever, and chat our ears off.
ON THE WEBSITE [
http://law.fm.net ]:The Lee & Wolfe website has a new links page [ see
http://v91.simplenet.com/leewolfe/links.htm ], which we've been intending to add for a while, since apparently you MUST have a links page on any website. But to make this one almost interesting, we've simply copied our bookmarks from the computer at our apartment up to the website. Whatever we've bookmarked, you get to see it. Who knows what's there or why. Also, don't miss the new additions to the Fun Bits page [ at
http://v91.simplenet.com/leewolfe/comedy/audclips.htm ]: Banjo Hank's "Ode to Lee & Wolfe," an original tune written by a good friendly country man named Hank who loves the show, and Celine Dion's Titanic song - The Lee & Wolfe Mix.
THE STRANGEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE:
Starving Children in Canada [at
http://www.kidlink.org/KIDFORUM/Hope/starving.html ]was, I thought, very strange. It is. But it's hard to deny the powerful strangeness of a Russian radio station with a playlist like the one I found [ http://www.openradio.ru/hitparad ]. Most of it's in Russian (in Netscape, try selecting view / encoding / cyrillic from the menu bar), but just look at the mix of music that you CAN read. Now THAT'S variety!Let us know when you find something strange. I'm sure I'll never see anything stranger, until I get on the web again later today...
Again, thank you all for your support of our job search!
Lee O.
